MCA Strike Off Status: How to Check if a Company or LLP Is Struck Off (2026)

A struck-off company no longer legally exists as a going concern. Its bank accounts are usually frozen, its GST registration is liable to cancellation and its directors may be disqualified. If it is your vendor or customer, you have a payment risk, an input tax credit risk and a disclosure to make in your financial statements.

This guide shows how to check the MCA strike off status of a company or LLP, what each status means, and how to screen a whole vendor list.

Quick answer:

Go to mca.gov.in → MCA Services → Master Data → View Company or LLP Master Data, enter the CIN, LLPIN or name, and read the Company Status field. "Strike Off" means the name has been removed from the Register of Companies under Section 248; "Under Process of Striking Off" means a notice has been issued and the company can still object. The check is free.

How to check MCA strike off status: step by step

  • Open mca.gov.in and go to MCA Services → Master Data → View Company or LLP Master Data.
  • Enter the CIN or LLPIN (more reliable than the name) and complete the captcha.
  • Read the Company Status (or LLP Status) field.
  • Note the date of the last AGM and balance sheet filed. A company that has not filed for years is at risk even if it still shows Active.
  • Save a screenshot or PDF with the date. It is your due-diligence evidence.

Checking many companies?

The portal checks one company at a time. To screen a vendor or customer list, export the CINs and run them through a bulk company master data tool or API, then flag every status other than Active.

The status you read in step 3 is often called the CIN status, because it is tied to the company's Corporate Identification Number. Checking it is the quickest way to confirm the company strike off status before you onboard or pay a supplier.

Only have the PAN? How to do a PAN to CIN search

Vendor masters usually hold the PAN and GSTIN, not the CIN, and the MCA master data search works on CIN, LLPIN or company name, not PAN. So the first job is a PAN to CIN match:

  • Check the PAN type. The fourth character of a PAN shows the holder type: "C" for a company, "F" for a firm or LLP. Only a "C" PAN will have a CIN.
  • Get the legal name from the GSTIN. On gst.gov.in, use Search Taxpayer → Search by PAN to see the GSTINs and legal name registered against that PAN.
  • Search the name on MCA. Enter the legal name in View Company or LLP Master Data and pick the matching company. Confirm the registered office matches the vendor's address.
  • Ask the vendor. A company must print its CIN on its letterheads, invoices and other business documents (Section 12(3)(c) of the Companies Act, 2013), so the CIN is often already on the invoice.
  • For many vendors, use a bulk PAN to CIN search tool or API. It returns the CIN, company name and status for each PAN in one run, so you can go from PAN to strike off status without searching each name by hand.

What each company status means

What each MCA company status means and what a buyer should do
Status on MCAWhat it meansWhat you should do
Active Registered and filing No action; re-check periodically
Active Non-Compliant Has not filed the INC-22A (ACTIVE) form Ask the company why; it is barred from some filings
Under Process of Striking Off ROC notice (STK-1/STK-5) issued, or voluntary STK-2 filed Stop advances, settle dues, get confirmation of status
Strike Off Name removed; company stands dissolved (Section 248(5)) Stop payments and new orders; review GST credit and balances
Dormant Obtained dormant status under Section 455 Should have no significant transactions; question any invoices
Under Liquidation / Liquidated Winding up under the Companies Act or IBC Deal only through the liquidator
Amalgamated Merged into another company Update the vendor master to the successor entity

Note

Exact labels on the portal may differ slightly.

CIN verification: check the number itself

Before you trust a CIN quoted by a vendor, do a quick CIN verification. A CIN has 21 characters, and each part means something:

PartExampleMeaning
1st character U Listing status: L (listed) or U (unlisted)
Next 5 digits 72200 Industry (activity) code
Next 2 letters MH State of registration
Next 4 digits 2015 Year of incorporation
Next 3 letters PTC Company type, for example PTC (private), PLC (public), NPL (Section 8)
Last 6 digits 123456 Registration number with the ROC

Then enter the CIN on the MCA portal. The CIN is valid only if it returns a company whose name, state and incorporation year match what the vendor told you, and whose CIN status is Active. LLPs have an LLPIN instead (format AAA-1234), which you can check the same way.

Why a company gets struck off

By the Registrar (Section 248(1)). The ROC can remove a company that did not start business within one year of incorporation, whose subscribers did not pay their subscription within 180 days, or that has carried on no business for two financial years without applying for dormant status. The ROC sends a notice (STK-1) and gives 30 days to reply, then publishes a public notice (STK-5). After the notice in the Official Gazette (STK-7), the company stands dissolved.

Voluntary strike off (Section 248(2)). A company that has stopped business and cleared its liabilities can apply itself:

  • Form STK-2, fee ₹10,000, processed centrally by C-PACE (Centre for Processing Accelerated Corporate Exit), set up in 2023
  • Special resolution or consent of 75% of members by paid-up capital
  • STK-3 indemnity bond and STK-4 affidavit from each director, STK-8 statement of accounts certified by a CA (not older than 30 days)
  • Not allowed within three months of a name change, a shift of registered office to another state, or a sale of assets (Section 249)

LLPs apply in Form 24 with the consent of all partners, after a year or more of no business. C-PACE also handles LLP Form 24 filings.

Why finance teams must check it: 4 risks

  1. Schedule III disclosure.

    • Since FY 2021-22, companies must disclose in their financial statements every transaction and balance with a company struck off under Section 248 or 560: its name, the nature of transactions (investments, receivables, payables, shares held or other), the balance outstanding and the relationship. You cannot make this disclosure without knowing the status of every counterparty.
  2. Input tax credit

    • A struck-off supplier's GSTIN is liable to cancellation. Credit on invoices from a cancelled GSTIN can be denied. Check the GSTIN too, using a GST number search.
  3. Payments and recoveries

    • Advances to a dissolved company are hard to recover, and a dissolved company cannot sign new contracts.
  4. TDS and vendor records

    • Payments continue against a PAN that belongs to a dissolved entity, creating mismatches that surface later.

Can a struck-off company be restored?

Yes, through the National Company Law Tribunal under Section 252:

  • Any aggrieved person can appeal within 3 years of the ROC's order.
  • The company, a member, a creditor or a workman can apply within 20 years of the Gazette notice if the company was carrying on business or restoration is otherwise just.
  • The NCLT order must be filed with the ROC within 30 days.

Rules also allow restoration through the Regional Director in some cases where the ROC struck off a company.

What happens after strike off

  • The certificate of incorporation is treated as cancelled (Section 250). The company exists only to recover dues and settle liabilities.
  • The liability of directors and members continues as if the company had not been dissolved (Section 248(7)).
  • Directors of a company that failed to file financial statements or annual returns for three years are disqualified for five years (Section 164(2)).
  • Banks usually freeze accounts once they see the status.

Screening your vendors in bulk

Check strike off status at onboarding, before large payments and advances, and once a quarter for all active vendors. Record the check date.

In practice, bulk screening runs in three steps: a PAN to CIN match for every company vendor, CIN verification against the MCA register, and a company strike off status check on each verified CIN. Store the CIN next to the PAN in your vendor master, so next quarter's check starts from the CIN. VenCPC, Figment's vendor management software, keeps a single vendor master with PAN, GSTIN and MSME validation and maker-checker approvals, so a status change is caught before the payment run.
