How to Check Income Tax Notices on the E-filing Portal, and for Many PANs at Once

Step by step: how to check an income tax notice on the e-filing portal, verify it is genuine, find the due date and reply, and how CA firms track many PANs.

A notice from the Income Tax Department is sent to your registered email and mobile, but the official copy sits on the e-filing portal at incometax.gov.in. Checking there is the only way to be sure you have seen every notice and its correct due date.

Step by step: check income tax notices online

  1. Log in

Go to www.incometax.gov.in and log in with your PAN (user ID) and password.

  2. Open e-Proceedings

Go to Pending Actions → e-Proceedings. This lists notices issued to you by the assessing officer or by the processing centre, with the notice date and response due date.

  3. View the notice

Open a proceeding and click View Notice to read or download the PDF.

  4. Reply

Use Submit Response in the same screen and attach your documents.

  5. Check other pending items

Also check Pending Actions → Worklist for items waiting for your action, and Pending Actions → Response to Outstanding Demand for any demand raised.

  6. Check the Compliance Portal

For information mismatches, open the Compliance Portal (linked from the e-filing portal) to see e-campaigns and AIS feedback requests.

Check that a notice is genuine

Fake notices by email and SMS are common. On the e-filing portal home page, before logging in, use Authenticate notice/order issued by ITD. Enter the Document Identification Number (DIN) printed on the notice, or your PAN, notice type and date. If the portal cannot find it, do not act on it.

What to note from every notice

DetailWhere to find itWhy it matters
Assessment year Top of the notice Tells you which return it concerns
Section Subject line Tells you the type of notice
Response due date Body or e-Proceedings list Missing it can lead to an order without your reply
DIN Header or footer Proves the notice is genuine
Documents asked for Body What to attach to your reply

Checking notices for many PANs

A CA firm or a company group faces a different problem. Logging in to each PAN, one at a time, to look for new notices takes hours and is easy to skip in a busy month.

Common ways firms handle it:

  • Authorised representative access on the e-filing portal, so one login can view clients who have added the firm.
  • A shared tracker that someone updates after checking every PAN. It works only as long as someone keeps doing it.
  • Notice management software. NoticeCPC syncs notices for many PANs and GSTINs into one list, shows each notice's due date and owner, and sends a notice alert before the deadline, so no one has to log in to each portal to find out what arrived.

GST notices sit on a different portal, the GST common portal at gst.gov.in.
